The 202 field guide

202 and 771: two codes, one District

Understand Washington’s original code, its overlay, and what choosing 202 actually changes.

The same geography

202 began in 1947. The 771 overlay was introduced in 2021 to supply more numbers within the same District of Columbia territory. An overlay adds a code without requiring existing customers to replace their numbers.

A business with 771 is just as local to the numbering region as one with 202. Choosing 202 can be a branding preference; it does not provide a different network, better call quality, or a government connection.

Use the full number

Local calls require ten digits. Include the area code on business cards, signs, email signatures, and saved contacts. Check stored dialing strings and phone equipment when moving to a new line.

The District is distinct from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia numbering regions. If your audience spans the metro area, explain your actual service area in words rather than relying on 202 to do that work.

What a buyer should compare

Write down the full ten digits of two or three candidates, their current purchase prices, and your intended use. Read each aloud and have another person write it down. Compare a premium ending against an affordable option before deciding.

Confirm the exact number with your receiving phone provider. The familiar area code is only one part of the purchasing decision.
